March 31, 2020. Eureka Springs, AR. Essential Job?

When we were going thru the "government shutdown" scares of recent years, we heard that government workers with non-essential jobs were not to report to work, while essential workers could report and be paid. If your job is non-essential in a crisis situation, why is there such a position when there is no crisis? Non-essential means the job isn't needed and you are being paid to do something which has no useful purpose of impact on others. That doesn't really make logical sense; and how does one feel about oneself if we are non-essential? If we were to ask our boss for a raise, we might end up being fired because the boss might take the opportunity to tell us we not only don't deserve more money, but the money we are being paid is really being wasted, because our job isn't of any value at all.
We're hearing about non-essential jobs again during the current situation. But aren't we really talking about non-essential businesses? I'm not trying to point fingers, but is a restaurant an essential business? We don't need gourmet restaurants to survive, becquse when such a business is told to shut down, we still have other sources of food such as supermarkets, farmers' markets, home gardens or MRE's. The employees of the gourmet restaurant are all essential to keep it running, but when it is shut down, even essential jobs are eliminated.
What am I trying to convey, and is it really worth my time time writing or your time reading.......? Is having fun with thoughts and words an essential job? With all the serious stuff we are now facing.............I THINK SO.

  1. I sit around and think about dumb stuff all the time. I've always thought when there was a gov'ment closure of some sort, that only the essential employees should report - well, if they are supported by taxes, they better be essential - too much non-essential fluff also leads to these folks feeling like they are entitled to their "positions". Delta (change) subjects...
Our home church, ChristLife, we've attended for about 15 years (on and off due to absences from home) has been absorbed by a much larger congregation. It will become a satellite to the main campus about 20 miles away. Fortunately, they have pretty much the same non-denominational, multi-cultural congregation and philosophy. I've heard the preacher preach - he's good. Some things will change here, like the name - to Word of Life - and the traffic - a Costco just opened on the North line, a four lane interstate overpass on the Southern boundary, and a giant Costco gas station across the boulevard on the West side. The East side is bounded by Interstate 55. They are keeping all our staff and will "retire" the Senior Pastor in the near future. Joel Sims is the new Pastor, about 37 years old, his folks were educated at Rema in Tulsa, don't know his qualifications, really not necessary, I've heard him preach.
Ya'll hang in there; Bud said that the grocery stores in Eureka were unnecessarily raising the prices, gouging rates, so stick to the Wally Mart.

    Miss seeing youse guys!
